ALTEN is seeking a motivated individual to serve as a Sustainability Packaging Engineer in the energy industry. The individual is responsible for managing the complete plan-of-work associated with product and upstream component and sub-assembly packaging.

They are expected to leverage packaging design experts, the Procurement team, Sustainability experts, manufacturing suppliers, and assembly plants, both internal and external, to ensure sustainable technology and materials are utilized at the lowest cost.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Coordinates all packagingrelated activities in a nonsupervisory role across all functions and entities.
  • Ensures the Global Packaging Design team is actively engaged in all aspects of specification, design, testing, and final qualification.

Packaging Engineering:

This team is responsible for final approval, uploading, and maintaining specifications/documentation in the Symphony database to packaging industry standards.


  • Collaborates with all internal and external customers to ensure early and consistent feedback, including component suppliers, assembly locations, partners, distribution centers, and transport companies.
  • Works with packaging supply companies to obtain detailed designs and supply packaging materials.
  • Collaborates with SE Sustainability experts to ensure roadmaps are clearly understood and aligned.
  • Works with Supply Chain Planning & Logistics to incorporate lotsize planning based on commodity needs for sustainability and other factors, as well as address returnable packaging challenges.
  • Facilitates the development of packaging specifications, development, testing, implementation, and final qualification throughout the supply chain.
  • Develops singleuse package designs as well as returnable packaging and associated logistics.
  • Forecasts labor and project costs necessary to develop and industrialize new packaging.
  • Develops packaging solutions in compliance with customer Sustainability requirements and lean principles.
  • Collaborates with crossfunctional team members as part of the new product development offer creation process.
  • Develops and implements packagingrelated processes for new and/or evolving products that conform to sustainable, safety, and lean principles.
  • Estimates and reports on product costs and capital and manufacturing industrial expenses.
  • Makes make vs. buy decisions as needed.
  • Works closely with Procurement teams, including category (commodity) management, to ensure the right supply base supports sustainable initiatives, including the supply of prototype packaging as well as productive.
  • Ensures product records are structured to support effective control of information and are transferred to GSC.
  • Maintains current knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment technologies and analyzes these technologies as related to applicability for use in manufacturing facilities.
  • Utilizes continuous improvement methodology to improve internal industrial processes.

Requirements:


EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial or Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, packaging engineering, or equivalent technical degree.
  • 10+ years of experience.
  • 2+ years of experience leading projects and/or teams.
  • Project management of packaging validation and qualification.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret packaging solutions and recommend best practices to improve services.
  • Work experience in distribution, manufacturing, or product development environments.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • AutoCAD
  • Creo (ProE) or Solidworks
  • Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive

TRAVEL

  • Travel required up to 40% (domestic and international based on project assignment)

CRITICAL BEHAVIORS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Strong communication skills in English (written and verbal).
  • Able to work within a multidisciplinary and multicultural project team: Technical, Purchasing, Industrialization, Marketing, Quality, ensuring the link with the operations facility (participation in design and peer reviews for concept selection).
  • Demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis and develop action plans to strategically eliminate barriers.
  • Proven ability to influence and convince through negotiation. Examples of previous leadership activities.
