**To provide support for complex metallurgical and materials science manufacturing assignments in any number of functional areas which impact design, development, research, test or enhancement of Caterpillar products, processes, systems, methods, etc.


Job Duties / Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The key role of this position is to provide support for complex metallurgical and materials science manufacturing assignments in any number of functional areas which contribute to enhancement of Caterpillar products, processes, systems, methods, etc.

This position works with greater independence than the Laboratory/Support Engineer.

Challenges include meeting expectations in delivering results, learning to consider alternative courses of action, making timely decisions and improving communication skills.


This position will report to the Advanced Materials Technology México team, and will be part of the Materials Technology organization as part of Caterpillar's US-based AMT division.

Worldwide, the Advanced Materials Technology group has more than 400 employees in the US, UK, China, and India and is responsible for heat treatment of more than +100,000 tons of steel per year.


The engineer will work daily within the workgroup, with the Monterrey team and US-based personnel and with other groups such as operations, maintenance, and quality to solve problems and improve processes.

Willingness and ability to work across job roles, prioritize work, and execute tasks in timely manner without oversight is required.

The position will require hands-on operation and troubleshooting of equipment.

Activities will include the development of new products and processes and improvement of existing products. This will include technical guidance on efficient operation, scheduling, and maintenance intervals of key equipment to minimize downtime.

This individual will also lead projects to rebuild or redesign equipment and will work with maintenance to improve equipment and increase uptime.


Responsibilities of this role include developing and maintaining process documentation for equipment; FMEA, control plans, safe job procedures, and standard work instructions.

This position is also responsible for the safe operation of the heat treat equipment.

This includes the creation and maintenance of Safety FMEAs, ensuring that safety and fire prevention equipment functions according to Caterpillar guidelines, and addressing day-to-day safety and ergonomic concerns.


The HT Engineer may be expected to travel to the US-Midwest for extended periods of time (1 month continuous or longer) for an initial training period.

This individual may frequently be required to travel between Monterrey and the US (up to 25%).

Deals with day-to-day planning and execution of assignments. Uses readily available, clear and direct references and provides straightforward solutions to problems. Incumbents may expect to have direct contact with other team members, other departments or units, customers or suppliers. This position provides technical direction and advice to lower level technicians.


Incumbents must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology changes and advancements within their function.

Learning will focus on methods, processes and systems applied to their functional area, developing communication skills and building a knowledge of Caterpillar's products, processes, systems, suppliers and customers


Required Skills/Qualifications:


  • BS in Materials/Metallurgical engineering
  • Selfmotivated, resultsoriented problem solving and prioritization skills
  • Previous experience in technical problem solving
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to travel to the US for extended periods of time (1 month continuous or longer)
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (conversational and technical)
