Lina Olvera

My Name is Lina Miroslava Hernández Olvera, I am 30 years old and I have a degree in Medicine.

What I enjoy most about my career is being able to make a positive difference in people’s lives, using my knowledge and capabilities to help someone in their time of need and making sure they and their loved ones receive the best possible care. 

My work experience starts in 2018, at my social service, where I spent 4 months in an urban clinic giving primary care to the general population, from children to seniors, attending to general maladies to chronic-degenerative diseases, child care, prenatal care and preventative general measures. The 8 following months I was in charge of a rural clinic, where I was the only physician in the community. 

My most recent experience is at a public institution, IMSS - Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, where I started at the beginning of 2021, primarily in COVID for the first year, where I rotated between the ER and follow up hospitalized patients, later on, amount of cases started to decrease, I was positioned between the ER first contact consultations and family medicine. Both positions were challenging on their own since they entailed different situations to overcome, but I was quick to adapt and accomplish the required goals. 

However, I’m always looking to grow and evolve in my career and after some time, realized that I wanted something different and challenging, that is why I decided to start looking for other job opportunities that best suited what I was looking for. 

I would like to use my degree in other ways, ones that are maybe not the typical route for a physician, but are still highly valuable and important for society. And that is precisely what caught my attention for this job. Once you are out of the hospital after a medical emergency or any other situation, there are times where patients needs might not be achieved, or situation where malpractice exists and the patient is left maybe with a bigger problem than when they started to look for medical attention, and although is not present in all cases, such cases exists and is important to ensure that their needs are met, since medicine is not only about curing right there and then, but to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient, always look for their best interest. 

I believe I am a great candidate for the job because of my background in medicine and also, working in a public institution, where many deficiencies are encountered on a day to day basis, made me realize the importance of giving patients the best care possible, being empathetic and being capable of setting aside my own problems and issues for a few hours during the day, to help someone else. For a doctor they might just be “another” patient, but for the patient, it’s their life, wellbeing and overall health. And after all, one of the things I love most about my career is knowing that I can make a positive difference in someone’s life.
