Purpose Statement:


The Plexus automation team is to identify, capture, develop, deploy and maintain solutions for the many opportunities throughout the Plexus value stream where innovative process and inspection solutions could have automation technology deployed to improve quality, efficiency and velocity.

This role creates, and leverages standardization to lead design, development, analysis, production, and commercialization of innovative technology software and controls solutions to advance Plexus Manufacturing operations.


Key Job Accountabilities:

  • Automation Solution Development
  • Develop solution for automation opportunities using Plexus standard process, Plexus approved solution providers and/or the global Plexus automation team. Develop Proof of Concept (POC) prototypes for new programs and tooling for additional products to be added to an automated production process. Solutions may include the use of Robotics, PLCs, PCs, safety controllers, sensors, pneumatics, and other typical automation technologies. Architect and develop software and system concepts that satisfy the innovative technology requirements. Lead programming and development of software and electrical capabilities. Lead development of required documentation, including software workflows, intended uses, requirements, electrical schematics and network diagrams for developed technologies. Define and execute required software verification and validation testing.
  • Automated Solution Deployment and Support
  • Deploy and maintain Plexus Automation Solutions within a Plexus Manufacturing Solutions Site. Sustain the performance of the solution through statistical process control and continuous improvement best practices. Communicate performance metrics to site leadership as well as the Plexus Automation Team. Maintain and deliver controlled software releases to customers using appropriate configuration management tools. Develop training materials and documentation for users; provide initial "trainthetrainer" training to ensure effective employment of capabilities. Maintain and propagate best practices and standard work for the capabilities. Provide ongoing technical support and capability upgrades over the lifecycle of the platform. Plan for capability obsolescence and replacement.
  • Automated Product Development Support
  • Support engineering development of products intended to be manufactured with automation technology. This includes reviews of the product design for potential risks which may prohibit the use of automated technology in manufacturing the product. Develop Proof of Concept prototype processes for new products. Capture the accompanying risk to the critical to quality attributes and communicate those risks to the Plexus Automation Team, stakeholders & customers. Capture and report findings to Plexus Engineering Solutions, customer, and/or other stakeholders.

Additional Accountabilities:

  • Identify and lead process improvement activities within the functional team.
  • Delivers solutions on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Effectively interprets customer inquiries/requests and takes appropriate action to produce high levels of customer satisfaction
  • Acknowledges and complies with the requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards provided in the procedures and instructions that are specific to each field, documentation that underlies the proper functioning of the integrated management system of quality, environment, safety and occupational health
  • Minimal travel may be required to meet the needs of the business (estimated <10%).
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in in Robotics, Electrical or Software Engineering or Computer Science preferred. Apprenticeship or equivalent years of experience allowed.
  • Two (2) years of related experience is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the key job accountabilities may be considered.

Other Qualifications:

  • Proficient in PLC programming, software design using C, C++, C#, Python or equivalent, robot programming, electrical design & troubleshooting, schematic reading, schematic capture, and requirements definition.
  • Understanding in hardware selection for system design that may include robots, PLCs, sensors, safety controllers, cameras, motors, and power sources.
  • Understanding of robots including 3axis, SCARA, 6axis, and delta robots (Fanuc, Universal Robots).
  • Awareness of vision system and lighting design.
  • Competent in Graphical User Interfaces/User Experience (UX) design.
  • Proficient in design for safety to protect operators, systems and product.
  • Proficient in software development, release and configuration management tools and processes.
