    Description

    The safety manager plays a critical role in derailment prevention and investigation in the assigned territory at KCS by providing oversight and direction to ensure the proper design, implementation, and administration of KCS safety programs, policies, and procedures to support KCS Operations objectives.

    Accountabilities

    • Uses extensive knowledge of railroad operations to assess the level of compliance with all KCSM and regulatory safety rules and regulations.
    • Provides guidance to leadership team on assigned territory for both strategic and tactical efforts to improve safety.
    • Regularly conducts risk assessments and audits to monitor and validate compliance with all safety initiatives.
    • Required to lead, or participate in joint operational testing teams.
    • Assists field leaders on the assigned territory in the research, analysis, and development of actions plans as necessary.
    • Conducts thorough incident reviews and reenactments to determine the root-cause and corrective actions necessary for sustained improvements and operational efficiency.
    • Demonstrates operational excellence by knowing and applying the business requirements. Demonstrates customer focus and contingency planning to ensure stakeholder expectations are met.
    • Understands the relevant business metrics and applies effective tactics to sustain a culture of operational effectiveness that produces teams of high performing, engaged and empowered operational leaders.
    • Identifies when a rule/regulation/policy has been violated and has one-on-one accountability conversations with an individual who has not met expectations, using KCS Candor, Aligning the Stars & KCS ABC's, and have the individual produce better results.

    Ideal Candidate Qualifications

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in a job related major field of study
    • Minimum five (5) years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

    Preferred

    • Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Safety, Logistics or Operations Management.
    • Five years' experience in field railroad operations position or equivalent.

    Working Conditions

    • This position has a regular full time schedule with a normal work week of Monday through Friday. There may be a need for occasional work after hours or weekends.
    • Business travel is an essential requirement of this job. Employees must be able and willing to travel away from their primary work location over 75% of the time.
