Position Summary


HIAS seeks one program officer to manage a research project led by HIAS, Columbia University, and El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF).

The primary aim of the project is to find out the risk and protective factors for common mental disorders among populations during migration.

This study consists of a pilot cohort study among migrants and asylum seekers in Mexico.


The program officer will work collaboratively with the research partners, HIAS HQ MHPSS team and HIAS Mexico team for the qualitative and quantitative phases of the project.

The program officer will be responsible for managing the local research team, submitting and adhering to research regulatory procedures, maintaining relationships with research partner organizations (e.g., local scientific advisory personnel, research ethics review), assisting with research processes and translations, and communicating with the key personnel.

Research team management will involve supervising data collection, participant recruitment, retention, and data entry conducted by 2 research assistants.

The program officer will conduct regular research quality checks, ensure the data are managed and stored appropriately, support research training, and lead meetings with the research team to monitor progress.

The program officer will report on these activities regularly to the principal investigators and HIAS program managers through weekly (at minimum) Zoom/phone calls.


Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Bachelors level background in health and social science research and/or psychology, social work or related field (Graduate degree preferred)
  • Desirable master degree level background in health and social science research and/or psychology.
  • Professional interest in public health, health research, mental health, protection, and refugee/migrants health
  • Minimum 35 years of previous experience of MHPSS research experience including participant recruitment and enrollment, data collection (qualitative and quantitative), data management, and overall research coordination
  • Experience creating and administering surveys in Kobo or others are desirable.
  • Excellent proficiency in English and Spanish (speaking and writing proficiency)
  • Proficiency in computer programs including Microsoft Word and Excel (experience with R, Stata, SPSS or similar software preferred)
  • Excellent social and managerial skills and ability to build rapport with people
  • Detailoriented individuals able to work both independently and with a team
  • Ability to work and supervise a team, maintain respect for diversity, uphold integrity, respect and accountability
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including the ability to regularly communicate with, motivate and support fieldbased staff as well as effectively communicate key program achievements and operational challenges
