    Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

    Purpose of Position:

    This position is within Americas' Regional Engineering and will be part of the development of new products and processes with an emphasis on speed of innovation into manufacturing through effective Change Management, Design for Manufacturing, Cost Modeling, and alignment to our global Product Quality Architecture. This position focuses on leading the industrialization of products developed through our IPP projects.

    Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for product/process industrialization in project teams, drive next generation manufacturing solutions into the production floor
  • Working with project team members, develop and / or improve processes using DMAIC and sound statistical methods to ensure process performance meets the level required to meet cost, capacity, and service level requirements for new products.
  • Lead the cost performance effort in projects, owning the cost model and ensuring product cost targets are met at product launch
  • Work with project team members to develop new products with designs that are optimized for cost, manufacturing cycling time, and quality.
  • Author process improvement capability plans. Complete technical reports for internal publication.
  • Lead and/or participate in creation of NPI metrics for product availability by using LA and GA criteria document.
  • Lead and organize process and product workshops to drive DFM Analysis in NPIs documenting and implementing improvement ideas during the NPI project lifecycle.
  • Working with the project team and process engineering team, ensure Product Quality Architecture requirements are met prior to closure of project.
  • Identify gaps in manufacturing capabilities and make recommendations to improve. Support those improvements. Included in this are programs in TPM and LEAN implementation. Identify and act on best practices globally
  • Visibly support the establishment and maintenance of a safe work environment
  • Lead the introduction of new process disciplines coming from NPIs to achieve PQA L2 at launch
  • Establish the optimum process for lowest total cost to manufacture a product
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship for teams of engineers and technicians across multiple locations
  • May be asked to drive project teams of engineers, technicians and peers
  • Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Optical Physics or related field, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years total of technology, development, and/or manufacturing engineering experience
  • Required skills:

  • Knowledgeable in fiber optic cabling and connectivity
  • Experience working in a high volume, people based, precision manufacturing environment
  • Strong project management skills
  • Good problems solving and analytical capabilities (particularly statistical analysis)
  • Excellent communication and leadership-through-influence skills.
  • High initiative, able to work with a minimum of direction, and able to work in team environment
  • Minimum 80% bilingual English / Spanish
  • Experience working with manual and semi-automated assembly processes of complex, high precision components in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience designing error-proofing solutions for manufacturing
  • Desired skills:

  • OCS Process Disciplines and Product knowledge including and not limited to connector preparation, polishing, furcation, fiber optic connector optical testing, cable management, etc.
  • Experience in the development or manufacturing of optical fiber cable and connector assemblies.
  • Training and/or practical experience in a field involving optical physics.
  • Green Belt DMAIC certified.
  • Green Belt PQA certified (for internal candidates).
  • Experience with Total Preventive Maintenance and the deployment of new equipment into manufacturing (Early Equipment Management – EEM).
