The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all.

For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes.

The position is in Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean / Global Solutions Division, UN-HABITAT, Nairobi, Kenya and Mexico City, Mexico.

UN-Habitat Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2002, ROLAC opened representations in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Haiti and Costa Rica. Recently, the work of the Agency has come to El Salvador. The office promotes and enhances sustainable urban development in the region and convenes the Latin American and Caribbean Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (MINURVI with partnership with local governments, private institutions, universities and civil society organizations to work towards urban sustainable development and the promotion of the New Urban Agenda.


The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan.

The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat.

It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.


The interns will work under the supervision of the Mexico Country Office and the Planning Finance and Economy Section, and under the direct supervision of the UN-Habitat Urban Lab.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Climate Change Intern internship is for six (6) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.


Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.


Responsibilities:

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will:

  • Support the development of climate vulnerability assessments and diagnosis for projects developed in the Urban Lab in Mexico and Nairobi.
  • Support the analysis of green and blue infrastructure, the assessment of ecosystem services provision and the development of naturebased solutions in urban areas for climate adaptation and mitigation.
  • Conduct research linked to climate change, urban regeneration, sustainable housing, energy efficiency, circular economy, and urban planning, and support the preparation of participatory workshops, trainings and presentations.
  • Support the elaboration of concept notes and project proposals, for vertical climate funds (AF, GCF, GEF, etc.) in particular, as well as normative and technical documents related to urban planning and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
  • Assist in the development of climaterelated plans, solutions, strategies, recommendations, actions and projects to support UN-Habitat interventions at national and local level, in alignment with international frameworks, such as the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
