    AstraZeneca is looking for a skilled and experienced Data Engineering professional to lead an Enterprise team , implementing and supporting data services for engineering teams across the globe.

    Our Enterprise DataOps service s provide the foundations for enabling AstraZeneca's - to be the pioneers in science, leaders in our disease areas, and transforming patient outcomes. We are looking for a Lead Engineer to drive the implementation, adoption and running of our Data Engineering platforms. These platforms are the basis of the services your team will offer to teams across the globe, in all departments, including R&D, Operations, Commercial, Finance and HR.

    The successful candidate will work closely with stakeholders across AstraZeneca to establish and drive an Enterprise approach to Data Engineering, enabling our business and science teams to deliver life-saving medicines across the globe. You will play a pivotal role, leading a high-performing team to deliver cutting-edge Enterprise DataOps services built on technologies including Fivetran, dbt Cloud and Talend. This position combines strategic vision with hands-on technical expertise to drive innovation in Data Engineering and Data Management.

    A counterpart role already established in the UK will focus on transformation projects, such as retiring legacy technologies and introducing new platforms. The new role, based in Guadalajara Mexico, will focus predominantly on operating existing services, with opportunities to support transformation projects.

    What you'll do

    Responsibilities will evolve over time as the way we manage our data evolves. They will include but will not be restricted to leading and carrying out the following.

    1. Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership to a team of talented data engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, and enabling people to be at their best.
  • Guide the development and execution of a roadmap for Enterprise DataOps services, aligned with organizational objectives.
  • 2. DataOps Platform Implementation

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of robust DataOps services and platforms to ensure efficient data processing, transformation and storage across the organization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate DataOps practices into existing workflows.
  • 3. Technology Stack Management

  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to continuously enhance the organization's DataOps capabilities.
  • Manage and optimize the technology stack, ensuring alignment with security, compliance, and performance standards.
  • 4. Team Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
  • Provide guidance on technical challenges and ensure professional development opportunities for team members.
  • 5. Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across departments to understand data requirements and ensure that DataOps services meet business needs.
  • Act as a liaison between IT and Business Units, fostering strong communication and understanding.
  • 6. Quality Assurance

  • Implement and oversee robust quality assurance processes to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and security of enterprise data.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of DataOps services.
  • HIGHLIGHT THE SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES NEEDED

    The role requires broad understanding and experience of modern data and software engineering principles, such as DataOps, Agile/SAFe, CI/CD and Data Management (Governance, Metadata, MDM/RDM, Privacy, Security). Also skills in related technologies, such as databases, SQL, programming and testing. Hands-on experience of dbt Cloud, Fivetran, Snowflake and AWS would be particularly advantageous.

    In addition to a strong technical background, individuals applying for this role should have business acumen and strong leadership capabilities. You will raise expectations within the whole team, solve complex technical problems and work alongside complementary delivery platforms.

    You should apply if you have:

  • A passion for technology and continuous improvement.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing teams in delivering Enterprise-level DataOps solutions, ideally from a global organisation with multiplie partners, internal stakeholders and team members that are geographically and culturally diverse.
  • Strong technical background in data management, Cloud computing (ideally AWS), and relevant technologies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across various departments.
  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, particularly around data requirements and compliance standards (GXP, GDPR, SoX etc).
  • Qualifications

    We would expect the following level of education and qualifications.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications in the following fields:
  • Data Engineering and related technologies (eg AWS, Snowflake, dbt Cloud)
  • Data Management (eg CDMP through DAMA)
  • Software languages (particularly Python, SQL)
